Our Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth: Product Details
Learning D-Earth Basics:
Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a naturally occurring, soft, sedimentary rock formed from the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of microscopic algae.
After the diatomite (raw DE) is collected, crushed, and refined; the final product is a silky, soft, off-white powder. There are many grades and forms of DE, depending on the intended use.

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (FGDE) is the most commonly used kind of diatomite. Food Grade DE is uncalcined, which means it is a natural product; not altered or changed by heat or pressure treatments. Secondly, in order to be considered Food Grade DE, the product also must have below 2% crystalline silica levels.
Why Choose Diatomaceous Planet’s Food Grade D-Earth?
- 100% Pure Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth.
- Mined from freshwater diatomite sources.
- Uncalcined (unmodified) with NO ADDITIVES.
- Highest levels of (amorphous) natural silica at 89-91%.
- Lowest levels of crystalline silica (<0.001 or less than 0.01%).
- Safe for Pets and People.
- Ideal for Homesteads, Gardens, DIY, and Artisan projects.

What is “Food Grade” Diatomaceous Earth?
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is a high-quality form of DE that is safe for both humans and animals, making it an incredibly versatile product.
It’s composed primarily of silica, calcium, magnesium, and other trace minerals, which provide numerous health benefits when consumed or applied topically.

What requirements make Diatomaceous Earth a Food-Grade product?
1) Uncalcined
The main factor is processing, particularly with heat treatments (calcination) or pressure, or additives.
In order for Diatomaceous Earth to be “FOOD GRADE” it must be pure and natural (uncalcined); no heat treatments, no additives, and no alterations.
2) Crystalline Silica
In Canada and USA there are specific regulations to measure the amount of crystalline silica in the product.
- This must be below 2% for the Diatomaceous Earth to pass as a food grade functional additive.
We are proud that our very pure and high quality Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth has the lowest sources crystalline silica levels, at an impressively low 0.1% or less in any given sample (≤0.001).
Crystalline Silica and Non-Food Grade
Crystalline Silica is the glass form of (non-food grade) Diatomaceous Earth, which is the result of heat and pressure treatments to create a non-food grade product. When the DE has been calcined (extreme heat), and transformed to be mostly crystalline silica, it is no longer food grade, and is often used in pool filters (for example).
